SMK Prakarya Internasional (SMK PI) is a vocational school in Bandung, Indonesia, a school in a dense urban area. The school was established in 1952, as a small private school to train youth from disadvantaged communities in engineering and has grown to an "A" accredited school.
In 2018, SMK Prakarya International is still in its original building, neighbouring with residents who buy drinking water for their daily needs. Lightwell was installed at school, with water pumped from the well, powered by solar energy. Drinkable water feed students and local communities.
At that time (and until 2022), tap water in Indonesia is not drinkable. PDAM, the local state-owned water supply company, supply clean but not drinkable water. In addition, some dwellings, such as in the dense urban area or remote area, are not connected to the water supply distribution. Thus, residents have options either travel and buy from a nearby private filtered water company or if their dwelling are connected, to boil the water for the family's drinkable water.
Lightwell helps to reduce the amount of time, energy and cost to obtain drinking water for school students and nearby communities. It helps them to have more productive time, energy and saving. In addition, the electronics and mechanics department use Lightwell as a learning tool about applied technology and renewable energy. Converting raw available water to drinkable water with solar energy, and to use the water wisely.
