Frequently Asked Questions

Water

How does LightWell produce safe water

LightWell uses an ultra-filtration membrane with 0.04 µm (40nm) pore. This pore size is smaller than E coli bacteria (size ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 µm), viruses (size ranges from 0.03 to 0.1 µm), or giardia lamblia, waterborne protozoa (size ranges from 10 to 20 µm).

What are the sources of water for LightWell?

LightWell is designed with fresh water input, including water from wells, river, spring and rainwater. However, these water sources have different characteristics and, along with other aspects, will cause the rate of filtered water to vary.

With different sources of water, can LightWell produce safe and clean water?

Yes, as long as it doesn’t contain the excessive salt and heavy metal. Water clarity is measured by turbidity in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). It shows how much the material suspended in water decreases the passage of light through the water. Suspended materials include soil particles (clay, silt, and sand), algae, plankton, microbes, and other substances. These impurities are typically in the size range of 0.04mm (40 µm) for clay to 1.00 mm (1000 µm) for sand.
Our ultrafiltration system can reduce turbidity to 0.1 NTU – which means that suspended materials are nearly absent. Importantly, the system exceeds the WHO standards that requires drinking water to have maximum of 5 NTU.

What is the life time of LightWell water filtration?

The water ultrafiltration system has a design life of 10 years

What is a life time of the transfer pumps?

30.000 hours – if we assume that the pump works continuously for 8 hours per day, the pump life time exceeds 10 years.

How does LightWell operate and maintain the quality of output, considering that minimum maintenance is required?

LightWell models use two or three tanks. The top tank stores raw water which provides enough pressure for water to flow by gravity to the filter system.
The bottom tank receives and stores treated water. The middle tank (optional) stores an additional 1000 litres of treated water for immediate access and delivery.
LightWell uses IBC food grade tanks with non transparent-white opaque colour, to ensure safe water delivery.

Can LightWell filter treat brackish water?

No, brackish water contains dissolved salt, with the size of less than 1 nm. Our R & D department is considering the development of a new product using reverse osmosis. Please contact LightWell for details.

Light

How does LightWell produce pure light?

The solar panels charge the high tech military quality, long-life batteries using intelligent controllers, which give a 10 year system life. The lighting uses the power from the battery.

What is lighting capacity of LightWell? How many dwelling can it supplies?

The lighting capacity depends on the product selection.
Our product lighting selections range from site, public/community hall lighting, distributed to various size village (10 to 100 houses), and a combinations of the above. The requirement defines the number of PV panels to be installed.

What is the type of light used and the power of light produced by LightWell?

LightWell uses LED lights, which are safe and efficient. They have a design life of 50,000 hours, which is equal to 27 years of daily use. The lighting for hall / public areas uses 3 units @30 Watt, and the lighting for houses consists of 2 units, @5.3W.

What happens if a light bulb dies?

Lights are designed for easy replacement. Please contact your provider for support if needed.

What happens when the community needs more lights?

LightWell is designed in a modular format and built to accommodate growing needs. This means that with any initial choice of LightWell, there is an opportunity to expand its services as required. For example, the basic LightWell only provides lights for a community hall. When the community needs more power, upgrade kits allow incremental expansion.

Power

Do PV panel produce AC power?

In an expanded configurations, the PV panels will produce enough energy for lighting and, under certain conditions, 230V AC power. The AC power can be used for variety of charging needs e.g. lamps, phones and power tools. At the higher capacities, the AC power options can power schools and remote medical clinics.
The models are designed in a modular way, in which lighting and power capacities maybe expanded to meet increasing demand.

Customisation

Do you make any customised design?

Most options are available, but some are mutually exclusive, so please create your chosen part number and our engineers will assist you in the optimisation of the model.

How can you guarantee the quality of a LightWell installation into developing countries?

We have quality assurance system in place, including establishing long term relationship with our assembly partners and installation contractors. The company has been established for more than 28 years. The water filter and integration system comply to current international standards.

Do you provide local technical support for repair and maintenance?

We have a local manufacturing distributor in Jakarta who has twelve branches across the country. We also have another distributor in Fiji, who also covers the countries in the South Pacific. They can be contacted for any technical support required. Alternatively, please contact LightWell International Ltd.

How easy can we obtain replacement parts?

Our distributors are able to supply all spare parts.
Alternatively, please contact LightWell International Ltd.

After Sales Service

What is the warranty / guarantee on LightWell products?

LightWell provide a comprehensive on all products against faulty parts or labour for 2 years from the despatch date. Please see our full Terms and Conditions of Sale. Please contact your distributor in the first instance

What happen when the community grow and need more water?

Light*WELL is designed in a modular format and built to accommodate growing need. If finance situation permits, LW capacity can be increased. For example, the basic Light*Well produces minimum 1200 liters per day, and additional filters can be added to increase the flowrate of filtered water to a minimum of 3600 liters per day.

Will anyone help if the product breakdown?

The distributor will be able to help you.

How can we test the unit is monitoring correctly?

The interface board will display messages for normal operation (green light), early warning (yellow light) or warning (red light) in which actions are needed.

Is there a diagnosis procedure for when the unit malfunction?

See page 36 (trouble shooting guide) of the manual.
